1965 Mustang-Parking Brake Handle Problems

my old one split in half and is hard to use so i recently ordered a new one today i went to put it on and the little stud piece is really jammed into the old 1....is there a trick at pulling these off....im near taking a hammer to it

. any help would b appreciated

It has been years since I replaced one but I think the hole goes all the way through the shaft so you just make a hole in the plastic on the other side and drive it out from the back.......i think. Mine is in a box at home so if no one has answered in a few hours I will be glad to verify that on mine when I get home.

I read an article somewhere on how to replace it, but I can't remember. I belive that you have to knock the old peg into the tube because it doesn't go through, and then it should roll out or you could try using a magnet to get it out of the top if the end under the handle is open. I am pretty sure it doesn't go all the way through, I think they just wedge it in there.

ya it doesnt go the whole way through thats the problem....its a small peg i have the new 1 in a box at my house.....the peg is no bigger then 3/8" as in long....the old 1 i cant get a grip on with plier to pull it out i may just knock it through thats a good idea thanks....and yah there is just 1 hole it goes through it DOES NOT go through the other side

Hello.

That is without question one of the most annoying tasks imaginable on a 65/66 Mustang.

How I do it is to cut away enough of the plastic to be able to grab the end of the pin with some side-cutters and walk it out like that. Good luck.

The parking brake solid shaft does have the hole all the way thru (at least my March 65 SJ car did. The handle obviously is a tube that slips over the main shaft. After chipping off the plastic opposite to the pin, my handle had a thru hole. Even if it didn't, I would drill the backside of the handle in line with the pin, just big enough to put a small punch in, then knock the pin out.

Hi, Has anyone seen the New metal handles? Check them out at Mustangs Plus out of Stockton California. They come in Shiney or Black. IT will be the last one you will have to replace!
