Default alternator trouble

i have a 66 bronco with a straight six in it. when i pull the positive cable off the battery the engine dies. now does that tell me i have it hooked up wrong or does it die cuz the circuit is not complete anymore? the alt is new and i have the wire from the red on the back of the alt going to the positive side on the solenoid.

I'm confused as to what your question is about .

Why would you remove the battery cable while the vehicle is running in the first place ?
Is the battery going dead ? Are you having accessory issues ?

test the voltage with a voltmeter at the batt with it running.

however, having said that, if you pull the cable with it running, and it dies, then you're not charging. This is not good for the alt though.

what are you running, a 3g or vintage alternator?? If it's a vintage alt, have you replaced the voltage regulator yet?

12.5 volts is normal battery voltage, and running should be 14-16 volts, if the engine dies when you disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, either the alternator is not working or the voltage regulator is bad.
