Default 1968 Mustang and Torque Thrust D

I have a set of American Racing Torque Thrust D wheels in 15x7 that will go on my '68 coupe. Unfortunately, they only came with a 3.75 BS. I'm running 225/60/15 tires all around. The car has the Shelby 1"A -arm drop and the 500# coil springs which were also cut. I had the body shop roll my wheel lips for clearance, but it may not be enough. FYI - No wheel lip mouldings will be on the coupe.

I really wish the front wheels had a 4.25 BS so that it could be tucked under the fender better, but AR doesn't make them with custom BS.

PS engineering makes some custom Trans Am style wheels, but they are really expensive.

Is any one running a similar combo and can share pics?

I mocked up the wheels on my fastback to get an idea for ride height. Front fender lip to the ground was 24"....I can honestly say this wouldn't work even if the fender lips were rolled. Rear was 26".

I want the car to have an agressive stance and sit somewhere around 24.5 to 25" up front and maybe 25.5" in the rear without rubbing. My other option may be to purchase a set of 215/60/15 tires for the front.

Contact the guys at Mustangs Plus and see what they say. The build Mustangs for track and sell the parts on their catalog. They also sell/use the Torque Thrust Ds. They also have a wheel backspacing article on their site.

I would think you would be alright with those rim & tires on the car. It is all going to be dependent on your suspension. The 65-66 models are tough because of the limited wheelwell space.
I know I have the same rims on my 66 with 235/60/15 in the back and have gone as big as 215/60/15 in front with stock suspension. I have even seen guys run 225's in the front of 66's. You just may luck out and be ok?

I've got the 225/60/15's on TT D 15X7 3.75bs on my '67 Coupe and am going for the TransAm style look. I think the 500lb. cut coils is what is lowering you too much. Here's what I have now:
560 1" lowering springs, 1" Arning/Shelby drop, fenders rolled on all 4, KYB GR-2 on all 4. In the rear I have 4 1/2 leaf mideyes with well lubed poly bushings (no squeeks).

With this setup I'm at 24-5/8" to fender lip in front and 24-7/8" rear, nearly level and my tire tread is just about level with the lip so it looks like there is no space/light around the tire/fender, just the look I wanted. With 225's I scraped the bulge of the tire and just clear with the fenders rolled. I think 215 may have cleared without rolling but I didnt' try, wish I would have.

The ride is fine and not choppy, I'd like to get better shocks later (Bilstein, Koni, etc.) but I'll wait til my track experience improves and my wallet. Even with the 4 1/2 leafs and poly my 10yr. old says the back seat ride is fine and the ride is sporty enough for some twisty roads here.

Jonk 67,

Thanks for the details.

I'm trying to achieve a Bullitt meets Trans Am car look with my coupe. I didn't want the car to look like a 4x4, so ride height makes a huge difference in looks and I think you achieved what I'm looking for.

Did you use Mustang Plus rear leaf springs? I may have to switch out the rear springs I purchased for a set of mideyes. I have a set of GT type leaf springs and 1 inch lowering blocks, but I think the car still sits too high (won't know for sure until the car is back together). Did you use lowering blocks in addition to the mideyes or was it low enough with the leaf springs alone?

I don't think my body shop did enough rolling of the front fenders, but the body man told me it wouldn't be a problem if I needed to roll them more later for additional clearance.

A set of 215/60/15 may be the ticket for extra insurance up front. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

I truly believe all these issues can be solved if American Racing simply made these wheels with a BS of 4.00 to 4.25.

Here's a pic with the front at 24.75".
