Default Replacing PonyCarb Autolite next week. Any Suggestions?

I have decided to replace my Autolite on my 65 289 that I bought from Pony Carbs. I have mostly been looking at the Edelbrocks and Holleys because there is a distributer for them in my area.

I am looking to get something in the 550 - 600cfm range. I have a mild cam, headers and 3.55s. I see lots of people with the Edelbrocks on Fords and they seem to work real well but I don't seem to see very many Holleys on Fords around my area.

I just want my car to work and at this point after having the carburetor not work properly since last August I am cutting my losses and dumping the paper weight.

Sorry to hear you got a dud from Pony. My 4100 from them has been on for two weeks and is performing beyond expectations! Prior to that, I had an Edelbrock 1406. It worked very well, although there was a lean stumble on hard accelleration from idle. This may have been due to its being "calibrated for fuel economy", though. I think an Edelbrock would be an excellent choice, but be aware that the throttle linkage will need to be somewhat improvised due to the location of the fuel bowls. The Edelbrock's are on the sides, rather than fore-and-aft, as on the Autolite. This forces you to position the throttle rod farther outboard than its original position, and it will not align with the kickdown bellcrank properly.

I personally like Holley's better than Edelbrock carbs. That is all I have ever run on my car. I have heard good things about the Holley 570 Street Avenger. It sounds like it would be perfect for your current mods.

If I were ever to go to a different brand name carb, the only other carb I would consider is a Barry Grant. Another good choice for your car if you go with the Barry Grant would be the 575 Speed Demon.

I personally went for the Holler Street Avenger and never looked back. It was very easy to install and adjust. I have a 302 in my 68 mustang, and a mild cam, nothing to high performance, but the 570 cfm works fine with both 289 and 302. I adjusted mine just a bit, and have never had to do anything else, great acceleration response, and gas mileage.

I have been looking at the Barry Grant Carbs a lot. Especially the 1282020 575CFM Mechanical Secondaries, and Ford Kickdown.

But like I said, I think I am going to stick to the Edeblbrocks or Holleys because there's a distributer in the area and I can just walk in and get one of them sameday. I have already checked and they have the ones that I would get in stock. I just wanted to get opinions and see how they are actually working for people.

Wow, I thought that spreadbore idea was such a good one with all the 1.12 4100s floating around. I have a 1.12 tucked away for "one of these days" when I get around to sticking it on.

I've heard good things about the Summit carb that just came out not long ago, based on what I've read here it is a copy of the 4100:

The spreadbore is a great idea. Chevy's ran them forever and it was a marvelous idea. The issue here that the carburetor itself wasn't put together right. But there is nothing wrong with the spreadbore idea.

When you compare a Squarebore to a Spreadbore the Squarebore doesn't make much sense. Spreadbore allows you to have a bigger carburetor on an engine that it normal wouldn't be able to take while still having driveability.

I had actually thought about maybe seeing if I could find an adapter plate and then see if I could find a ~650cfm Thermoquad (or any other 'true' spreadbore carb) to run.

Wow , I am amazed to hear you are not happy with a 4100
I would give my eye teeth for another one.
But in response I have run both Holley And Edelbrock with good results .
The only issue I had was with my holleys leaking after winter storage
I have heard very good things about the new Summitt carbs also

My problem isn't with the 4100 Carburetors themselves, because they are probably one of the best carburetors out there still.

My problem is the 4100 Autolite that I got from Pony Carburetors. They did such a terrible half-job on it that it hasn't worked from the beginning (last August) and then it took over 6 months for them to get back to me. It came with a torn secondary diaphram, a severely corroded dash pot (which has since fallin apart on the car), badly seated gaskets on the carb (vacuum leaks and every other kind of leak), floats cranked pretty high and the air/fuel was set so rich that all you could smell with 200-300ft was gas. I also have to take the choke apart because that's not working either. I personally have just had one really terrible experience with them and ontop of that they have been patrinizing myself and my father whenver we try to call.

Now my warranty is up next month and I still haven't received my replacement parts that they were suppose to send out over 2 months ago but kept frigging up. That's my problem. And the fact that we have short Summers here in Nova Scotia.

Yeah, it does suck. I getting pretty P.Oed. I bought this car to have fun and to enjoy it and since I bought this carburetor I haven't been able to do that as much .

But, on the other note, Nova Scotia is beautiful everytime of the year. Even though winter is inconvenient it can still be beautiful.

Wow, hope I don't have any issues with my 2100 that I got from them. So far, so good. But I hope I do not have any issues or get any static with CS. I just took the car out to get it painted today(no plates, bumpers, etc). It ran pretty good and the 1st drive down the road since 1978. Good luck with your carb though.
