Default 1966 Mustang engine type

I just purchased a 1966 coupe> The car does not hace the original motor. The person I bought the car from said that the motor was a 289. Not Sure? How do you really tell? There is a stamp on the intake manifold that says 289 but when we were doing a tuneup on the car, the marks and pointer on the engine pully dont match what a 289 should have. It has the marks of a 302. Using chilton book as my reference.

Got a digit missing in that vin , the engine code letter
But to answer your initial quandary the only way to truly tell a 289 from a 302 is to remove the oilpan and check the casting mark on the crankshaft forward counterweight a "1M" is a 289 a "2m" is a 302

Hypostang, doesn't the "1M" just tell you the crank is for a 289? It doesn't tell you it's a 289 block.

I think it would be easier and less messy to remove the starter and look for the engine casting number. Then, post it here.

Remove a valve cover, and you should see a "289" cast into the cyl. head.

It sounds like your intake may be aftermarket. I don't think Ford cast in "289" on the intake.

Your VIN should read: 6F07_111470 with an A, C, K, or T after the 7. A: 289-4V, C: 289-2V, K: 289 - 4V HiPo, and T: 200-1V (6 cyl).

The only thing the VIN is going to tell you is if the car was a I-6 or a 289 because the 302 wasn't around at that time. Not until 67 or 68. What I suggest is getting the casting number off the engine block and putting that through google. That will tell you what kind of block it is (289 or 302).

Ford did cast 289 on the manifolds. Mine has it on it and its a Ford iron manifold.
