Default 1965 Mustang coupe " need about 2'' in the rear

I have a 65 coupe and im running with bigger tires than stock(275/40/17). Im looking for some more rear end clearance. Im not interested in air shocks. The leafs are origional and im sure they are sagging a bit, and new ones will be in my future. Any how take it easy on me if this sounds stupid. The axle sits on top of the leaf spring, can i pull it and with some welding and new clips place it under the leaf spring. Im thinking this would give me a few inches, but am wondering the pros or cons on doing so. Im not racing so im not real concerned about the rear end not sticking or any of that maybe at a later time. More than anything im looking to get out on the road sometime soon and am just trouble shooting a few things. Over heating, rear end gears and rear end clearance. Maybe there is a simpler solutuion... Everything ive done is the first time ive done it it so dont be too technical. Before this i have only changed oil. My 65/289/2bbl is now 65/302 bored out .60 with roller rockers sneider cam solid lifters doug thorley headers borla exhaust fed by holley 600. Ive learned alot but suspension is once again new to me. thanks everyone for all the help up to this point.

Have you thought about some aluminum blocks like they use on lifted pickup trucks? Or you can get some longer leaf spring hangers for the rear of the leaf springs. The blocks you can find at most Auto Parts stores. The longer shackles for the springs used to be very common and could also be found nearly everywhere. I don't know if you would have to go to a spring manufacturing place or can locate them at a mail order place of business such as Summit Racing or Jegs. Whatever you do, make sure they are installed properly since suspension is very important.

If it is rubbing because of the width of the tyres or the offset, then raising the rear is not really going to sort the problem.
If you load the rear or go through a dip in the road it will still rub.
If the springs have sagged, then the correct thing to do is repair or replace them.

If its rubbing on the fender lips you roll them it gives just enough room. With the axle on top of the springs a block would lower it.Lifting shackles change the pinion angle have to shim it and will make it handle worse. The short answer is buy new springs if they still rub roll the fender lips.

Replace the rear springs. Mine were original and new stock replacements raised the rear 2-3". I used stock replacements, but you could go with 4.5 or 5 leaf for more lift. They are an easy change. The only tough part is getting the front bolt out. You will most likely have to cut and grind it out as it gets rusted to the frame. Mustang Monthly has a step by step article on how to change them. Here is another after a quick search 1969stang.com Your 1969 Mustang and 1970 Mustang Supersite!. It made the rear of my car feel like new. I had to lower my rear end after the new springs to get it back to where I wanted it. Good Luck.

I saw another post where the wheels had spacers between them and the hubs. If you have these you may be able to remove them to get the tires under the fenders. I am more of a stock look person myself. The other option is the research the wheels and get some that place the tread under the fender. That is my choice buts costs money.

I think those 275 are just too wide for a 65/66 even with a fender roll, more backspacing and new springs.

thanks for the replys! i will go with new shocks and start there. its sucks because there is only about a 2'' section were the fender rubs other than that i have free travel upwards. im hopeing that the new leafs will prevent me from having to buy new tires and all that. i had to space it just enough not to hit the leafs. im hopeing with new leafs there wont be soo much travel but well see. Will new leafs stiffin up the ride. i took it out for a drive earlier i think im still bouncing...

Depends on which springs you use they make a 3 4 and 5 leaf springs more leafs the stiffer it is.Shocks depends the brand how stiff they are.

When you say bouncing, that could mean a couple of different things. The shocks dampen the ride, meaning after up hit a bump, they won't let the car continue in an up and down motion. They should let the car go up and then down and settle. If it continues to bounce, then the problem is shocks. The Leaf springs will control, to some degree, the ride height, as Andrew said and depending on the amount of leafs control load. Hope this helps.
