Default 1965 Mustang Engine Firing Problems

Just got my new crate motor (347 Stroker) in the car and I'm using my old accel pointless distributor and my old coil and I'm sure I have it wired like it was but I'm not getting any spark to the plugs. I'm getting fire to the + side of the coil so doesn't that mean my coil had to have gone bad sitting on the work bench? I can't imagine that but I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?

Don't rule out that there could be a possibility that the sensor in the distributor is not getting the signal to the coil to fire. The coil could still be good. Need to get out the volt/ ohm meter to see if there is current from the sensor when the distributor is turning.

lol... get out the volt / ohm meter to measure "CURRENT" ?. You check the dist. contacts "dry" with continuity, but I gaurantee you they are good. Make sure you are getting the proper voltage across the neg and pos of the coil. If thats good, you might have a bad coil, but I think you probably put it back together wrong. Go back and check your work, improper wiring, loose connections etc.. Consult the ignition wiring diagram in your repair manual if you dont remember what went where.

Could someone that doesn't think it's so funny that I've never used or know how to use a volt/ohm meter please tell me how to check to see if the sensor in the distributor is getting the signal to the coil to fire? I might not be smart enough to use an ohm meter or to understand what Mr. 429 ragtop told me to do but I was smart enough to take pics of all the electical connections so I know it's wired right and there are no loose connections. By the way, I just went ahead and put a new coil on it so I know it's not a bad coil.

Do you own a meter? By the way, my lol was directed to 93stang, not you. He obviously dosent know how to use a meter either. You dont use a volt / ohm meter to measure current. Let me know if you have a meter and I'll tell you how to use it. Also, what do you mean your getting "fire" to the positive side of the coil? Does "fire" mean voltage?. If so, what was the voltage reading?. Where did you have the probes when you measured this "fire", lol. Sorry, I'm an electrician and never heard anyone call voltage "fire" before, lol.

Get an extra spark plug.. Unplug one of the distrubutor wires from the spark plug and connect it to the spark plug. Ground it to the engine. Get someone to crank the engine ... U see spark ? If no.. check wiring on distrubutor black either grounded or to the negative side of hte coil, red to the positive side of the coil along with ignition wire to positive side of coil (red one with the green stripe). If no spark and you changed coil.. hmm.. module on distrubutor bad ?

I did go and buy a volt/ohm meter. I knew I was getting voltage to the + side of the coil because I also have my electric fan hooked there and it was coming on when the key is on. I checked the voltage and it has 12.8. I placed one probe on the + side of the coil and the other to a shock tower bolt. Earlier I tried using a spark plug to see if it was firing like faststang68 mentioned. I do have the red wire from the distributor and the ignition wire on the + side of the coil and the green (it's green instead of black on my Accel distributor) on the - side.

you have the coil and distributor wiring wrong. On the coil, connect the ignition wire from car to positive side of coil (+). Green on distributor goes to ground, usually a condenser on the outside of distributor, and the red on the distributor goes to the negitive (-) side of the coil.

Distrubutor is hooked up correct. Did you get any spark when grounding the plug ?

Remember you can fry or short your electronic module if the wiring from coil is backwards... be careful.

LOL -slowstang, once again you are clueless. The magnetic pick up his dizzy has is a DRY CONTACT type, not and "electonic module" lol.
Here is a basic ford ignition ckt lesson for you. You will notice the dizziy interupts the negitive ckt to the neg side of coil. via a ground from one wire connected to the dizzy case or block, through the DRY CONTACT magnetic pickup in the dizzy THEN to neg side of coil.

Default Wiring

Not sure if you figured it out yet. But I had this problem too. Where my old wiring harness with the sensors and wire to the coil. come through the firewall. You might have the wire that is supposed to be hooked to the coil hooked to one of the sensors, maybe not.. Just a suggestion. Happened to me, best of luck.
