Default 6 cylinder c4 in V8?

Hi!

I have looked through the threads, but have not yet been able to determine whether you can use a '65 6 cylider C4 auto transmission with a 289 V-8 without internal modifications. Does anyone have the answer?

Thanks!

Yes you can use the c4 trans on the 289, but you will have to change the bell housing on the transmission. A 6 cylinder engine is a different bell housing than a 289.

429 is correct. No internal changes at all

I burned through (2) 6cyl C4s before breaking down and buying a new TCI Street Fighter C4. It was probally more that they were worn out then being from a 6cyl car, but don't try putting an old trans behind a fresh 289/302!

Also remember not only is your bell different, but so is your converter and flexplate.

Sorry to tell you this, but there are more clutch discs and steels (They go between the clutch discs) installed in the V8 C4s. The housing is the same (Trans housing, not bellhousing) and a V8 C4 rebuild kit should have what you need in it. If the steels aren't included you will need to find some from a trans. part supplier.

The calibration of the valve body may also be different. I'm not positive on this, but I think that the V8 version has two extra clutch discs. The reason is the increased amount of torque that the V8 puts out.

There is an article somewhere that also talks about gear ratio needing to be taller if you have high horsepower with a c4. All c4's not just out of a 6cyl. They recommend at least a 3:55 gear ratio because of the way the transmission oils itself.
