Default sanding under the car?

I put my car up on stands and looked under it, the body is dirty but not rusted and the floor pannels are solid, so do I need to clean the underside or is it fine since there is no rust? Also there is this plastic or metal sheets up under it that are glued to the underside and have holes cut to reach all the nuts, is this from someone else fixing the floor panels or was it made that way? The top of the floor on the inside is some sort of black tar and there wasn't any carpet with the car when I bought it. The floor is solid everywhere except for the passenger side floor it will push in and out when you press on it but there are no holes in it and it will support my weight. Is this a problem or not?

thanks

Have the car, media blasted. Then you'll know what you have to work with, but I think when it comes back after your description of the car you'll be looking at your worse nightmare. Because that car, did not come that way, Mike. SCT Tuner.

Does not sound very good, remove whatever things are glued on and see what is under it, LOL. Take a wire wheel on a drill to spots that look suspicious and see exactly what you are dealing with.

As mentioned in previous posts. The car did not come with any plastic glued to the underside. What is you goal with the car restore or have a fun driver? If you are looking to have a fun driver for a couple of years I would leave good enough alone put a carpet down, and use the car as is for now and start looking for another car in the future. If you are looking to restore the car I would start by taking the plastic panels off very slowly in sections to see if any metal is left above it, you may need to reinforce the car if you start to notice major structural damage. Or it might be easier to sell the car as is since you do not know anything at this time and get another car. I hope your worst nightmare does not come true.

What year and body style is this car? If it is a convertible the floor does have extra metal below where the seats are for reinforcement, maybe that is what you are talking about. Here is a pic of a 65-6 coupe floor:

Even the convertible reinforcements weren't bolted or screwed on. The black tar sounds like some kind of undercoating or bed liner that someone put on to "stop" rust. The "oil can" sheetmetal can be fixed using a torch, bracing, and very cold water. "Oil can" is a nickname for panels that pop in and out, just think paint can after you unseal it. But as others have stated, depending on your use of the car and desires for it, it is probably worse than you think. At the very least, replacing floorpans/inner rockers.

The car is not a convertable it's a 1967 coupe, all I won't right now is a car to drive around for a few years and the floor is solid so would it be ok to just put down carpet. The "tar" inside dosen't look like bedliner it looks more like a sealent of some sort I may be able to post pictures soon. Under the sealent is the metal of the floors, I don't really have the money to put down all new floor pans right now,the guy I bought it from bought it completly assembled and drove it home. He took it apart and then ran out of money and sold it to me so i don't think there is any major structual damage.

thanks
