Default 1966 Mustang Starting Problems

Hey Guys, I just purchased a 1966 Mustang and have been doing some work to it for the past week or so. I fixed, the horn, heater, brakes and back up lights, but now it won't start or even turn over without playing with the key. I have a 6 cylinder, 200 motor.

When I turn the key, sometimes the gauges work but other times nothing. It takes about 20 or so turns with the key for the starter to kick in. And then when it does kick in it sticks and the starter won't disengage. When it does start, I play with the key then it sometimes will either turn off again or the starter will disengage. So where do you think the problem is, starter or ignition? Is there a way to check out the ignition? Can I check the starter without removing it? Hotwire it? How do you hotwire a Mustang?

It worked fine before I started working on the car. Car has been in storage for about 20 years, with only about 2,000 miles since the late 80's.

Thanks Wayne

check the solenoid. take the wire cap off of it and take a screw driver or wrench or somehting metal and touch it between the post that the wire cap was on and the ground. if the car starts fine then its your ignition if youre still having problems then it is probably your starter, or possibly your solenoid.

http://images.mustangmonthly.com/pro...ner_fender.jpg the solenoid is the cylinder on the left side of the picture with the wires running to it. its on the passenger side mounted on the inner fender in front of the shock tower mount. Hope this helps

This has nothing to do with the starter or solenoid. You need a new ignition switch - period.

A new ignition switch, as said. Not the lock and key portion, but the switch portion.

veronica told me how to remove it this is her post to me

Hello. First, you have to remove the lock cylinder from the switch by turning it to the accessory position, inserting a paperclip or something into the little hole in the face of the cylinder to release the lock pin, then turn it a little further in the counter-clockwise direction. Then, you have to push and twist the switch itself from behind the dash and that will release the switch from the bezel. The bezel will then pull right out. You have to remove the instrument clusterhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adT...lass_10x10.gif to do this. Here's how to do that, if you've never done it before. It isn't nealy as big a deal as it might sound.
