Default Is my 289 Water Pump Spinning in the right direction?

Hello,
I have a 1966 Convertible with a 289. I recently replaced the water pump. How can I tell if it is spinning in the correct direction? I was just curious because my motor has been running hot and someone told me it could be spinning in the wrong direction.

Thanks!
Jamie

Welcome to the site Jamie.

They all turn the same way on a 289 so how might you reverse one? As long as the belt runs over the top of the pump/fan pulley its turning in the right direction.

I think the impeller vanes are usually straight so even if it turned backwards it would still pump water.

What are you calling hot and how do you know? The original Ford gauge is pretty lame at telling you real temperatures. With weather in Orange Co now in the 90s that tends to make everything hot.

Did you put the spring back in the lower radiator hose? This makes a huge difference. Does it seem to be running hotter than before the pump was changed?

Ivy is right. As long as the belt is turning the pump pulley it almost has to work. Check the tension on the belt. It could be slipping. Also, let it work up and carefully take the radiator cap off (safety first- use a rag and move slowly holding the cap down until you are sure if is not going to spit on you). You should be able to see the water moving. Here is a picture of mine to compare.

I wouldn't worry about a spring in your lower radiator hose. I have never had one and never had a problem.
