Default Last 289 classic mustangs

I have a 1968 Mustang with 289 (originally 2V) with C4 transmission. The numbers on my Mustang say that it was made in February 1968. Checking the numbers on the engine show that it has a 289 block, but has 302 cylinder heads. I have always wondered when the last 289's were put in Mustangs (e.g., Feb., March, etc. 1968?) and if the 302 heads on my engine were an indication of the switch the 302 in transition. Does anyone have information about the time frame of the last classic Mustangs with 289 that is more specific than early/late 1968? Thanks in advance...

The first 302s, change level 1, were in August 1967. The last 289s, change level 16, were in July of '68. When Mustang went from one to the other I don't know. Some 289s were factory built using 302 blocks but I didn't know of any factory 289s with 302 heads.

You may not have original heads. What does the Al tag on your intake manifold say? How close do the cast date codes on the block (down by starter) and heads match the stamped engine assembly date which is in the block just in front of the left head?

I put a new 4V intake manifold on it and the original intake is in storage, so I don't have that information for you. Are there any known cases of original Mustangs coming with something like my 289 block with 302 heads. I am not sure if the person I bought it from (some 12 years ago) put the 302 heads on.
