Default 1966 Mustang Brake Dust Shields Necessary?

I was wondering if Brake dust shields (aka splash shields) are necessary on a front disc brake system?
I currently don't have them on and I noticed that the rotor and exterior of the caliper are dirty, and was wondering if the shields protect against that?

Also My disc brakes squeal and I was wondering what type of brake pads to use. I believe the brake pads I have are metallic and although good quality they squeal loudly.
Any brand that you use/recommend would be helpful.(Stock pads)
Thanks.

yeah the dust shields are more for the dust going onto your discs. The sound coming from your brakes are do to hard brake pads, i run ceramic pads on my mustang and that got rid of it, but then again i have the wilwood disc brakes, i dont know if local parts store make ceramic brake pads for classic cars. But then again it would hurt to check, the ceramic pads are softer, less noisy and creat less dust on your rims.
