Default Speakers for rear decklid

I'm placing an aftermarket radio in my '68 coupe and I'm also planning to upgrade the rear speakers.

My dilemma comes from trying to find a pair of modern technology 6x9 speakers that don't have space age looking grills. I can't believe how difficult this is becoming. Nearly all the speaker grills I've come across look like some sort of Tranformer character.

I recently saw a pair of plain black Pioneer speakers in the NPD catalog, but at a price of $124 (page 23 of the '09 catalog). I'm sure these speakers must go for less elsewhere.

Anyone else come up with a solution?

You might look in salvage yards, check all makes and models for something basic looking. Radio Shack used to sell plain black metal 6x9 speaker grills, I had them in the rear deck of my Dodge, but Radio Shack doesn't have alot of that stuff anymore. Ebay may be an option too. Try talking to a local stereo install place is my last idea.

It's a little more work but I'm mounting my speakers from the bottom and covering the package tray with a mesh (like nylon window screen) to keep the covering from sagging over the speaker holes, then covering the tray with a light material to match my interior. My plan is to have the tray look one piece so that you can't tell I even have speakers mounted.
I really don't want anyone breaking in to get a pair of speakers that cost less than the window or other damage.

Here is a reproduction of the original dealer or factory installed rear speaker grille.

I tried about the same method in my 66 (and for the same reason) but the sound quality was pretty poor. I wound up mounting the speakers (6" round vice 6x9's) under the package tray and using the two of the original, black metal, speaker covers. Looks and sounds much better.

Thanks for the replies. PBLA, you found exactly what I was looking for. Modern style speakers with a plain looking grill cover. I'm going to re check my rear deck measurements and probably order the first set you found on e-bay.

Ya it is so annoying all of these speakers with stupid looking grills. took me a couple hours of looking online and I bought some Lanzar speakers, the cone and stuff is green but the grill it comes with is just black plastic with plain black mesh grill.
