Default Operating the convertable top

Hi all, new here and have ?. Well to start my son picked up a 66 rag top for free. It's in need of a lot of help, floorpan, motor, top, bodywork well everything. Appears to be a complete car with a lot of trim and such in boxes. Even some new parts. The cars been sitting garaged for the last 5 or 6 years with the hopes of a restore but it just didn't get done. Floorpans were started but never finished. Front fenders and doors are off. Interior is all out except the dash, instrument cluster and steering wheel. We pulled the motor and tranny over the weekend. Motors shot, seized had a lot of water in a few of cylinders, tranny well who knows. Anyway the top is latched to the windshield and has been disconnected from the 2 cylinders in the rear. Is there a way to manually release the top from the windshield or is it done all with the switch? Also when we get to the floorpans should we add some kind of structual support or crossbraces to keep it from moving while workin the floor? Thanks as I know these will be the 1st of many ? to come on this road ahead.

Hi Ed; Welcome to the site! As far as the top is concerned, there should be two handles above the visors attatched to the top frame. Just grab the handles, and pull straight back. Each handle will pull back, and go to its designated side. That's it for the top, as far as your floor pans are concerned. If you have the complete pan, from front to back you shouldn't need any structural brace. You can tack weld something in, if it makes you feel more comfortable but you don't need it. The floor pans can be done with a MIG welder, but if you have experience with a TIG welder it's a much cleaner looking job and less work grinding the welds after. Good luck with it, sounds like your going to have a nice car when completed, Mike. SCT Tuner.
