Default Toploader 4-Speed Fluid coming out tail piece?

Hey everyone. I have my engine in the shop right now so i pulled my transmission out to clean it and the driveline up a little bit. I replaced all the hardware and pins and checked the u-joints. Anyway, while the transmission sits on the garage floor without the crossmember attached, the tailpiece sits low enough so that the gear oil inside the transmission leaks outs. Is this normal or is there a seal that should be replaced?
I thought that maybe when the driveline is connected it wouldn't do this. I just don't want to put it back together and have it constantly leaking. What are your thoughts?

Default Toploader 4-Speed Fluid coming out tail piece

Hello Shnate,
The leak is normal if the shaft is not in and the tail is low.
There is a seal but it is made to seal with the shaft in place.

I would not worry. Did it leak before? If it did then that is a different issue.
But remember the shaft fills 3/4 of the opening and the seal just fits.

If you did decide to replace the seal it is pretty easy. I don't think I would however
but for a good link go here

There is a section on remove/install rear seal Print Dad

What print dad says is correct. nothing to worry about unless it was leaking before you pulled the drive shaft/yoke out.

replacing the seal is extremely easy, if it looks a little worn, replace it as they are not expensive and its easier to do if the tranmission is out of the car so you can remove the 5-bolts and the tail shaft housing. use a piece of PVC pipe from home depot and drive it out form the inside. Yyou will most likely need to replace the tail shaft housing gasket if you remove the tailshaft housing.

or Call Mark Hammond at Toploader heaven, he will sell you a seal and gasket cheap and tell you exactly what to do step by step.
