Default B.S. or Not - What Machine Could Diagnose a 1969 Mustang

I talked to a mechanic today about some trouble my 1969 Mustang Coupe is having - specifically, it won't start. He said that he could charge $20 to tow it and $40 to hook it up to a machine to see what was wrong with it. Was he B.S.-ing me? How can he hook it up to a machine if there is no computer in the car. Is that possible? What machine is he talking about?

Unless he is talking about a timing light or fuel pressure gauge. Do you have an electronic ignition? Maybe he means something like that.

Sunbeam (not the bread) made an osilator (looks like a ekg but for cars) for cars like that. But most places don't have them or even know what they are. Also the VAT 40 and ohmmeter can do the same thing. If he has these then yes. Quick and simple. Plus that's the cheapest tow and diagnostic I've ever heard of in the last 15 years.

A Sun Machine oscilloscope won't do anyone much good unless the car runs; it looks at ignition waveforms, etc.

$40 is pretty cheap, so is $20 for towing for that matter, but I have no idea what 'machine' he might be thinking about.
