The AOD is a good option. It will allow you to run a little more gear in the rear end for better acceleration and the overdrive gives you back the turnpike driveability. Only a few things have to be done - you can use your stock auto
trans shift unit. AOD, converter (non-lock up), flex plate for the set up, new
tranny brace, and maybe shorten the drive shaft a bit. You'll also need a TV cable - you can use stock but Lokar makes a nice unit as well. I have an AOD in my 65 and I did not have to alter the driveshaft length. A stock AOD will handle mild engine mods easily. I ran a beefed up AOD in a fox body with a motor making 450 rwhp without issue. There are several good overviews of this swap on the internet.
Mustangs Plus has all the stuff you would need and are VERY helpful.
