Default 1966 Parking Brake handle problem

I need help. My old parking brake handle was cracked, so I bought a new one. Well, I knocked the old pin in so that I could pull the old handle off, but now I have a problem. While pulling the handle off, the metal inside it tore apart. Now there is a metal tube/sleeve stuck on the parking brake tube. How can I get it off? I have tried lubricating it but it won't come off. So I have a new handle, but I can't put it on. Any ideas? Thanks, Michael.

Maybe try a screwdriver and a hammer knocking on the sleeve from behind, or you might have to cut a line in it with a dremel and cutoff wheel, then pry the cut open enough to get it off...

Sorry about the quality of the pictures but they give you a rough idea of what is wrong.

Ok, I tried the screwdriver and hammer trick. It didn't work. I am starting to wonder how much a whole new assembly would cost. At this point it would be easier.

Default 1966 Parking Brake handle problem

Hello 66Sprint200,
I am out of my league here but if I understand it, the sleeve needs so come off and is parts of the new handle?

Looking at the picture it would seem like the sleeve is held in place with a rolled pin.
Usually there should be a hole through the sleeve.
Are you sure there is not a hole 180 degrees on the other side of the shaft? The pix looks like 2 holes where you are working. Could the sleeve be not lined up with the back hole.

Is the pin actually out?
If is isn't
I think the simplest solution would be to drill straight threw the shaft and pin and take out the pieces then squirt the sleeve with PB Blaster.

If the pin is out and the sleeve is stuck on the shaft, try PB Blaster for 2 days with repeated applications. The using 2 vice grips, clamp the shaft and the sleeve and rotate to free the sleeve.

Last case....try to cut with a chisel or saw from the inner section towards the driver seat where I drew the line. You just need to free the sleeve a bit for it to rotate. Perhaps a simple hack-saw cut along the sleeve in the direction of the line would allow it to slip open. When cutting, try the PB and vice grips.

Don't give up this part will come off.....Print Dad
