Question Backfire!!!! Alot!!!!!

SO i have a 289 with a mild cam and a holley 500 carb. It also has been bored out .030 flat top pistons. When running idle it runs rough and after replacing a coil and starter solenoid. and now stalls while driving. It backfires every like 5-7 secs. does this mean that i may have a valve issue like i have a dead cylinder or worse, 2? i have a compression tester but before i spend the hours test i want to know if my assumption is correct or if im going to waste my time...

any advice, Thanks

Shane

sounds like your timing is low. pull it up a few degrees and try that.

Default I have had this problem.

Check the firing order, I cant tell you how many times I have had my 289 apart over this winter and now into the summer..

I had so many back fires when I had the rotor pointing to what I thought was the Number 1 TDC which it was BUT it was on the Exauhst stroke, back fires out the carb like no other..

Spun the crank around by hand until number 1 came up and sure enough I was like 180 out.. Repointed my plug wires and it fires and runs like a top.. Could be out a tooth or two on distributor also.. Check your number 1 postion and see where your rotor is pointing. Hope this helps.

Default Backfire!!!! Alot!!!!!

Hello shanes0406,
I was gonna start this and say your motor is junk but that would be rude of me.

I think what I am trying to say is don't consider the worse at least not without checking some things.

There are many things that could cause backfires,
1. - Timing
1. - Lean fuel mixture
3. - Crossed wires
4. - Check for a loose or cracked vac line

When I have a problem like this I try to do the following:
1. - Ask yourself when did this start? Had I done anything recently prior to the problem.
2. - Next i would start simple: - Check fire order, and double check that all plug wires are correct. Try not to have them cross each other when possible
3. - Check the height of the fuel in the fuel bowls. (This will tell you if you have fuel to the carb also)
4. - As suggested, bring #1 up to TDC on compression stroke and see where the rotor is pointing.

I remember when I was a kid, I'd get frustrated and overlook the little things.
So many times that's all it is. Generally bad things like broken cam lobes or valves don't just happen. It is far more likely to be something little.

of course if you check and re-check all the little things a compression test would answer a lot of questions. Sure things break but you usually know it when it does.

I am sorry if this seems like a sermon but I hope others will see it and try to remember start small.......Print Dad

I have a 68 with a 500 lift solid cam, I have a 650 cfm holley and mine got better with jetting the carb up, do you think you are not getting enough fuel into it?

Shane I just put a 347 stroker in my car started it up it was backfiring out the exhaust. I checked the valve lash it was fine checked timing fine. It ended up being the spring pressure on the valve to light of spring replaced it with a heavier spring and its fine. check the small stuff first TDC firing order some cams require a 351 firing order. it should be on your cam card. good luck
