Default 1966 289 Fuel Issues

Hello everyone. I have a 1966 Ford 289 in a 1960 MGA. Since the day I got it, it has had an Edelbrock 600cfm carburetor. I have always felt that it never ran as well as it could have. I currently removed the regulator because it has always caused issues and only allowed for 5.5psi (which is actually recommended in the Edelbrock manual). It is getting 6.5psi now which I think is fine mainly because after 20 minutes it no longer starts to sputter (my initial test anyway).

I'm just curious if the 600cfm is suitable for my setup (stats below)?

600cfm is ok. But for a more precision tune you need 540-570 cfm for the 289 w/ slight mods. I would look into getting smaller jets on the idle circuit.

Okay, I figured that might be the case. I'm going to take the carburetor a part tonight and see what jets and rods are in it. They are probably the stock ones, but you can never be sure. At the worst, I'll buy a rebuild kit (maybe) and a calibration kit.

Any advice on tuning the carb? I've read countless articles and forum posts. The only part I'm unsure about is when adjusting the idle mixture screws if the idle speed screw should be at a certain location? I can't really find anything that says otherwise, but I feel that it could matter.

IT doesn't matter about the idle screw. Use it to keep the car running while you adjust the mix. Tune the carb to the highest vaccum setting (no modulator attached) with the mix screws. Then you may need to idle down a bit.
