Haven't had this car long, but it takes effort to move transmission lever into park, can do it, but it sticks. Could there be dirt or rust down in the mechanism where bar locks to change gear?

Check the adjustment of the shift linkage from the shifter to the trans shift lever. Another place to check is the shifter itself, if it's OE, it has a small length of wire cable that is attached to the button on the side of the shifter handle. This cable unlocks the shifter handle when the button is pushed. If the cable has stretched, the shifter won't want to unlock completely from the park position. The cable is reproduced and available from Mustang part vendors.
