Default 1964.5 Mustang Relocate Instrument Volt Reg

Having problems with my gauges working on and off. New volt reg does not work all the time. Because of the hassle and pain in removing the instrument cluster every time to check or replace it, has anyone ever relocated the volt reg to somewhere under the dash for easier access? I would think it would only take a few lengths of wire to reconnect it somewhere else?

You can move it anywhere as long as the case has a good ground with the little metal tab
I had 2 aftermarket units fail so I ended up making a solid state one with Radio Shack parts for 5 dollars and have had no problems.

Great - thanks for the info - I'll go and get the parts right away. The original reg has pulsed voltage but it appears that the constant 5v works as well or better?

Works the same with the gauges but the solid state one has no moving parts to fail.
After the conversion some people have had the gas gauge not go all the way to full with a full tank and others have been ok.

Good Luck and BE Safe

Ron, I also wrote a note to your site - I just built your IVR and seems to work great. I used a large body fender washer for the heat sink and bolted the unit to the underside of the dash for easy access. I did not have the capacitors available for the unit and am wondering how critical they are for the output?
I'm still having problems with the fuel gauge - works when grounding the sender wire but no response on hook up. Would a bad tank ground cause problems?
regards
Keith
