Looking for a 351W with 5 speed manual transmission. What donor should I look for?

My son has a 67 mustang with a 289 and a C4. He wants to go with a manual transmission with overdrive, probably a T-5 but we would like to compare that project against a total transplant. Is there a good combination 351W/T-5 donor out there and if so what car or truck had it?

Thanks, Jerry

I wouldn't use a truck tranny. Try finding a 351W and a T5 that was bolted behind a 302. 351w were in trucks and vans in the 80-90s, full size cars like towncars and granadas etc. Off the top of my head I can not think of anything from the factory coming with a 351w and a T5.

is there a good 4 speed with a 351 for racing

I have a 289 with a c4 currently. The thread starter is my dad. I am looking for a bigger engine with a manual tranny. Is there a 5 speed that will directly bolt to a 351w or is there a reliable 4 speed that was a stock option?
thanks, Stephen

A T5 will bolt up to a 351W just like it will to a 289/302/5.0 engine. You just need the proper 28 ounce imbalance flywheel. One from a stock 5.0 engine won't work, they use a 50 ounce imbalance.

u want a t-5, pull it out of a 87-93 mustang 5.0, use the same bell housing off of it. ull find some at ur local junk yards, u can stick that on ur current 289, and have it converted to stick mean while u look for the 351w. then later u can just drop in the 351w. ull have more fun when u get ur t5 any way vs gettin a 351w on a c4, u just get threw the 3 gears faster, where as the t5 lets u build more speed, and itll make it more fuel efficient, and u can choose how high u wanna rev all that fun stuff.

ur gonna need the clutch pedal, and all the linkage as well plus the equalizer/z bar, or a hydraulic clutch kit, flywheel and pressure plate to mount to that, a after market cross member for the tranni, a special tranni mount. ur c4 yoke will work on it, mine did, but i didnt use it. u might or might not have to shorten ur drive shaft. lot of ppl say u have to, but mine didnt need it they recommend 1" to 1 1/2" of play from yoke end to tranni tail, (after i had about 400 pounds on the trunk, 3/4 inch of play was good enough for me)

u can even use the 5.0 out of the 87-93 mustang u get the t-5 out of, just put the 289, oil pan, dipstick, timing cover, i doubt the fuel pump will work on it seein how theyre efi 302s and dont have the fuel pump drive, so u get an electronic fuel pump, bolt on an intake and carb, and u get to benefit from a roller valve train, and some extra hp. just an option, if finding a 351w is to hard.

I would just go with a later 302/5.0, not the 351. Even the T-5's in a 93 Cobra were only rated at 310-330 ft-lbs of torque. Think even a stock 351 is 10% over that. Using the 5.0 is easy just by moving all your existing front dress from your 289. It would fit in just like the 289. A 351 might well require upgrading your rear end and cooling systems plus front suspension.
