Default Alternate 3-Point Harnesses?

Hi:

I have gotten one of those 3-point harness kits sold by most of the catalog sources for the '65. Before I attempt to install it, has anyone out there come up with any alternative ways to incorporate lap and sholder belts into the car? This is a safety upgrade I really want to do, and I suspect there are various ways to go about it, and appreciate your suggestions.

Many thanks,
/s/ Chris Kennedy

I mounted my 3 point on the 66 like stangnet did.
I did not take pictures of mine but there are some here:
Front & Rear Shoulder Belts

The down side is the upper point is below your shoulder and can compress your back in a wreck. I would rather have that than be impaled on the steering wheel or face planting the dash.

An alterantive for the 65-66 is to mount it on the roof but there is not a strong mounting point there like in the 67 and later Mustangs. You can add metal to form a anchor point but you will need to remove or pull back your headliner and weld in metal. I saw someone who had done it but can find it in my safed links.

Good Luck and Be safe

Since my daughter drives my 66 I simply installed a roll-bar and hung the three-point system from the bar. Like you , I purchased the standard three-point system from a catalog mustang store. The roll-bar does not show from the outside of the car and provides additional safety if it should ever go over in a crash. Prefab roll-bars are very cheap and install by welding or simply bolt in. The belts hang in the correct height for our shoulders and they slide back into their holders when you unsnap them to get out of the car.

Hi, I'm doing a '67 so it's a little different, here's some links I found for '65-'66 to give you ideas:
Shoulder Belt Installation Tips for 65-66' Mustangs
Seat Belts w/Shoulder harness

If you mount to the roof, which IMO is preferable for safety, you can have extensions added when the belt is made that will lower the tension point to just above your shoulder which is where modern belts pull from.
Here's a couple companies that make nice belts and you can have them add extensions to:
Seat Belts For Mustangs-Andover Restraints,Inc
100% Replacement seat belts for Cars, Trucks, Vans, Jeeps, Classic Cars, Vintage, Street Rods & RV's

If you install a rollbar into a car be sure that the driver knows that you can't have any rear seat passengers, an impact would probably cause their head to impact the rollbar. The car basically becomes a two seater IMO.
