Default Carb & Dist removal info? 68 FB

whats up all...

hey, this weekend I want to remove my dist and carb for some touch up paint work on my intake.... please correct me if am i wrong.. but both should be realtively easy...

for dist, as long as I don't turn crank...simply screw out and then screw in.... and ...will white grease be ok to coat the bottom of the dist as I put it back in ?? And, when I put the dist back in...do I need to connect the leads to the plugs in the firing order?

for carb....unhook the fuel line...and then take off bolts...but will this ge messy...if I still have gas in the bowls ?? I want to remove the carb completely to get at the intake. Should I replace the gasket and spacer while i'm there? Do I have to prime it when I put back on... simply pour gas down into the bowl correct???

anyother tips for me that the books don't talk about?

sorry but as you can see I want to screw this up......

PS - I have 390 4 bbl motor. Thanks fellas very much for any help.

-Patrick

mark where the rotor is pointing, when you drop it back in, use that as a gauge, I usealy use tape on the block as the mark....as for the carb, swap both spacer gaskets, and expect fuel to come out....it is best to leave some fuel in the bowls so it is not dry

You should have to remove kickdown linkage and vacuum advance as well shouldn't he?

Tell you what...let me ask you this...how much trouble could I get in by doing this..... not having done this ever....could I put myself in a big hole....or as long as take the approach where I go slowly and write down my steps as I go...should I be ok?

Put it this way...i want to have my car ready for a 50 mile drive to a show in 2 weeks(to hang, not to get judged)....don't want to screw that up by doing damage!

thanks as always **

by the way...I'm learning alot as I go...all the posts in the past have been very helpful...hell I cut my first two bolts off lask weekend!!!

You should be alright as long as you're not rebuilding or anything, just touching up the paint won't hurt anything. The kickdown linkage I believe is just clipped on, so just take a pare of pliers and to it, you'll know what I'm talking about when you look at it. the vacuum advance screws in, so just take a wrench and unscrew it. Same with the fuel line. Carb's are tremendously easy to pull off, just a little common sense will take you a long way. And follow Twister's instructions on the dist. I would definitely put tape where it was so it's easily matched up for reinstall, that was a great tip from Twister.
