Default 1966 mustang window washer re-installation

So, my 1966 fastback was missing the windshield washer system when I bought it and I'm now about to re-install a new system. I have the one-step wiper system and I realize now that I should have picked up the washer pump for the one-step system. However, I got the pump for the two-step system (Motorcraft C5AZ-17664-A) and I figured that I could rig it up to work. It has two wires on it, but when I connect these to a 12v powersupply, all the pump does is click once. My original assumption was that one wire goes to 12v and the other to ground, but apparently either I'm wrong or there is something wrong with the pump. Now, I have only "dry" tested it without any fluids and I haven't connected the power to it for more then maybe a second at a time, so the motor hasn't burned up for sure.

Does anyone have any experience with this washer pump? I can't even find any info on it on Motorcrafts webpage.

Thanks!

Well first you should have a two prong plug with a male/female connector on it. Next one lead goes to the black/white wire from the wiper switch. the other goes to a ground on the wiper motor. According to Ford. Hope this helps

Hello. The two speed wiper system has the pump ground at the windshield wiper motor. That's what the second wire is for. The single speed wiper system has the pump ground straight to the body of the car through one of the mounting screws, so, the path to ground at the wiper motor isn't there. How you would need to do that is to have the single wire that's coming through the firewall from the wiper switch which supplies power to the pump attached to one of the wires on the pump itself, and the other wire that's coming out of the pump will need to be grounded out to the body of the car. You will also have to change the connectors. The single speed pump wire coming through the firewall will have a spade connector and the pump itself has the .180 bullet connector so, you can't just plug one into the other.
Hope that helps.

Great! Thanks for the confirmation. This is pretty much what I figured, but with the motor only clicking once, I wasn't sure.

As the motor is still only clicking once when connecting to to power, I am wondering if it has to do with the fact that the power supply that I am using to run it only has 1.5A current capacity. I can see from the schematics that the washer pump is on a 4A circuit and maybe I just need more "juice" to get it going?

Default Veronica is corect (as always)

Veronica is right -

I made the same assumption as you and thought I could easily swap the two-speed pump - it is not as straightforward as I assumed so I went back to the single-speed pump.

Neither one of these is real cheap - ($35 - $45) - I was able to trade my pump for the other one - maybe you should consider that.

Hi again. Or, is that halloo jälleen? Here's a wiring diagram for that. I took the original factory diagram and erased everything that wasn't windshield wipers and washer pump so that you would be able to pick it out easier.

Well, I'm not too concerned by the connection issue as I'll just connect one of the wires to one of the mounting screws for ground, but I'm more concerned whether my pump is shot or if it's just isn't able to draw enough current from my power supply to get it going. I'll have to try it on a battery during the next couple of days. I would take it back and exchange it, but I picked it up (new) at a swap meet as these parts aren't that readily available in my neck o' the woods.

Puhutko suomea, Veronica?

Cheers!

Eh, my finnish isn't very good as I only live in Finland, but I'm not a native. What was that about the pump?

I'll run some tests on one of our systems at work and hopefully I'll be able to figure out what the issue is.

Hi again. Mine is not so good either. It's getting better though. My husband's parents were born and raised in the former Soviet Union and speak some Finnish. My father-in-law is helping me out with that, and, I play chess with a few people in Finland on-line and they're helping me, also. What I said was that your pump should be fine.

Quick update:

Turns out that the pump is working. It just needs more than 4 amps to run (tried in on a 4A power supply at work and the pump, while "pumping", brought the supply to its knees.

I guess I'll hook it up to a separate circuit in the car as it would just blow the 4A fuse that's on the washer circuit.

Thanks for all the feedback on this.
