Default 1965 rebuilt 289 has trouble starting

first of all sorry the engine didnt come from a mustang and neither is it in one but i have a 1965 289 bored 30 over and completely rebuilt very recently, i put the 289 in a 91 ford ranger with a 1976 C4 attached to it, because of clearance issues i had to go with a PMGR starter that i wired myself

i wired the hot wire from the battery to the starter just like the 4cyl was in the truck, then instead of wiring the solenoid on the pmgr to my fender i wired a push button to kick the starter in the cab, with the key on coil is hot, engine runs

my problem lies in its stubborness for some reason "usually" but not always it only clicks the solenoid on the starter and wont turn the starter over after it has been driven and left to sit a couple minutes... usually keep pushing the button it will turn over eventually, it has yet to strand me but has been known not to crank when i wanted it too

thought the battery was to small, put a 700 CCA battery in it compared to the 450 it had and is still having trouble, starter is brand new not even 2 months old

im just looking for someone to point me in the right direction, maybe someone has had this same problem cause its hard to trouble shoot it when i walk outside to mess with it and it turns over 20 cranks in a row, come out the next day to go to work and then it just clicks

thanks in advance, anything i could check to rule out possiabilities would be appreciated

I had the same intermittent problem. I was activating both the fender and starter's solenoids with the same small wire from the ignition switch. There wasn't enough current to feed and activate both. I changed the small wire to the starter's solenoid to the large terminal that is opposite the side that's always hot on the fender's solenoid. This way the starter's solenoid would be activated by full battery power when the fender solenoid is activated.

This can be done another way with the fender solenoid in use. Place a jumper between the large and small terminals on the starter's solenoid. The large wire will be the only wire that will need to run to the starter from the fender solenoid. I would have made my change this way, but my wiring had already been run.
