Default Tips on Removing Rod Retainer from Door Lock Cylinder

I am redoing my passenger door and want to replace the lock cylinder before I close it up. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the rod retainer out of the old lock cylinder so that I can pull the cylinder and replace the cylinder and put on a new rod retainer. It won't pull out and I can't figure out how to get leverage on it without bending the rod. I've tried it with the cylinder clipped to the door and without. No success. Anyone have any tips for this operation. I just want to put a new cylinder and gasket in before I close the door back up. I've replaced the window regulator and weatherstripping -- so once I put the Weathershield back on, I want to have this door closed up for another 40 years. Any help would be appreciated.

What year is your car? Is it a newer one with the retainer clip on the rod? You may have to take the rod loose from the lever as well so you can move it around and get a better pull on it.

It is a 68. I was trying to avoid further disassembly. But that may be worth a try.
