Default Electrical problem with turn signal on 1965 Mustang

Hello,

Brand new to the board. Have a tech problem someone might be able to help me with.

I installed a new turn signal switch in my 65 fastback. When I honk the horn or turn the wheel hard it will "arc" electric sparks.

I was sure that I have the male ends through the junction block in correct order.

I thought I might be a problem with the horn so I pulled out the blue wire power to the horns and it still arc and sparks!

Has anyone tackled this problem before and can help me out? ASAP!

Thanks!

Hmm, As I recall, the early 65 models have a horn relay just below the voltage regulator.

In those models, the wire from the horn relay coil goes to the horn button and is grounded when the horn button is pressed.

In the later '65 models the 12 volts goes up the column, through the horn button and on to the two horns.

Which do you have?

I presume the turn signals are working ok? That wiring doesn't spin with the steering wheel, only the horn contacts spin.

I also presume the new switch assembly had the right connectors on it down at the base of the steering column? If you had to "adapt" it, it may have been the wrong style of the two possibilities.

Default 2 horn set up

Thanks for the reply. It has the later set up with two horns. Voltage runs up the column.

I have the same 6 color wires in the diagrams matched up in the turn signal block.

What should I look at next?

Thanks!

Hello. The blue wire with the yellow stripe is what takes power to the horns. It isn't supposed to have power on it without the horn button depressed. The yellow wire is what has constant power. This wouldn't happen to be a Grant steering wheel, would it? If yes, that's almost certainly the source of your problem.

Default continued problems

Hello,

It is a reproduction 66 Shelby steering wheel. Should I pull the large yellow wire? Does it need re routed? If it is pulled from the junction block, will it kill the turn signals and horn?

Thanks for the continued help.

Hi again. The yellow wire comes straight from the headlight switch to the horn button. The horns are all that it supplies power to. If it was disconnected, the only thing that would quit working would be the horns. It kind of sounds like the tabs on the back off the horn button that have the wires might need to be bent over towards the center a little bit. The one that goes out to the horns could be touching. I think that would be the first thing that I checked.
BTW, here's a diagram of the horn wiring, if that will help.
