Default 1966 Mustang Bellhousing Issue

Well I have a 66 mustang with a 289 and a 4 speed toploader.

I Just built an 86 5.0 302 motor for it at about 325hp.

The problem is that the 289 in the car is a 64 hipo block 5 bolt block and the new motor is the newer 6 bolt bellhousing pattern.

bottom line is that I need a new bellhousing and the question is what to get. I have to get a new flywheel at 50oz imbalance for 5.0 motors so I was going to get a new clutch at that time as well. I was wondering if I could use a 5.0 clutch with a standard 6 bolt bellhousing and the 4 speed? Any help appreciated

It is my understanding that the pressure plate and linkage need to match the bell housing.

Since you already have the 5.0 50-oz engine I would go with an 86-93 5.0 T5 Clutch, flywheel, bell housing and a Z-Spec T5.

The cable clutch kit from Modern Driveline (sold by places like Mustangs Unlimited) works well, so you can eliminate the mechanical linkage and not have to mess with the clutch pivot the 86 block doesn't have. There are good hydraulic kits as well, but for a 66, most are incompatible with a power brake booster.

You will need a T5 crossmember and rear transmission mount.
A tail yoke from a T5, or an AOD will be needed, and the drive shaft will likely need an inch taken off, but you will have to measure.

The T5 style speedometer cables are available as well as a couple of choices in a shifter. There is even one that appears stock!

The 86-93 housing does work and is quite popular, but should you come up with a 94/95 bell housing, it will set the shifter back about 11/16 more than the 93 and, as I understand, this will fit the shifter hole in the floorboard a little better.

Be aware the 94/95 housing will not accept the Z-spec T5 I mentioned earlier. You will need a 94/95 T5 for the newer housing, or swap the newer style input shaft into any earlier T5 with the 3.35 first gear ratio and it will work.
