Default 1965 Mustang Turn Signal Switch wiring problems

Hi I'm new to the boards and I have a question about by 65 coupe's Turn signal switch. Recently I pulled the old girl out of the garage and decided it was finally time to fix those turn signals. Following some advice and schematics over at Veronica's Blog I was able to determine that I had power comming into the turn signal switch in the right places and found the turn signal arm had wore the plastic down making a signal brake light on the drivers side inoperable. Wedging a screw in the column slightly would actually make it function. I then found that I did not have power to the turn signal flasher bulb so I re ran the wire from the ignition switch and that solved that problem. so..... I ordered a new turn signal switch, got it installed in the column, re used the original wiring harness plastic connector and plugged it in. Next thing I know my blue wire which turns into a orange if I'm not mistaken that goes to the turn signal flasher has melted! With turn signals no longer working i removed the new switch and patched in the old one. what i found was that the green striped wire comming out from the new turn signal switch had melted and fused to the harness within the column. Indeed the the only thing that really changed was removing the old switch and installing the new. The old switch still works it's just worn. I'm afraid if I go out and purchase another it will behave the same. Does anyone have any clue as to why this may of happend in regards to the flasher lead and the green stripe wire getting toasted? Thank you so much in advance. I have checked wiring to make sure I don't have any shorts and I'm at a loss?

Hello. On a 65, the blue wire coming out of the turn signal switch should go through the connector and, still as a blue wire, goes to the flasher. You should have an orange wire with a yellow stripe bringing power to the flasher, then the blue wire goes from the flasher to the turn signal switch to bring power into the switch The only orange wires would be the orange/blue and orange/yellow that go to the two prong connector that goes to the taillight harness. That diagram isn't nearly as clear as it need to be. I need to go fix that.

This site really helped me with my 67 light problems. And it's got awesome diagrams!

Good luck,
Also get a continuity checker to test hot leads and grounds, in order to melt something, you have connected to hots.

Thank you so much folks for the fast replies. I have rechecked coloring codes and utilized the continuity tester and have power comming in and exiting to the turn signal switch. This wire was blue as well as the proper color for in comming power. I will update with my results when the new switch arrives. Thank you so much again guys :-)

Resolved!

This time around I wrapped the wiring from end to switch, I then removed the collar off the column and rather then pulling with a string I baby fed the cabling down the column where she came out rather nice near the floor. It's my belief that the first time I pulled the wiring through a sharp edge cut into some of the wiring inside the column and caused the short. I've been going strong for a couple weeks now and had no issues. best lesson I took away from it was be patient and don't take shortcuts becuase if you do your going to pay for it later. Thanks all for your help and advice
