Default 1967 Mustang GT 390 Fastback Build Questions

I think I am needing some direction on where to go from here. This is my first attempt at a restoration like this and I am learning it as I am going along.

I am going to post a few pics of where I am at.

Here is the car the day it came home from the body shop in July.

After some discussion with the body shop it was decided I would partially assemble the car before it was completely painted so I didn't totally screw up my fresh paint job.

September

The car did not have an engine so I dropped in the one that I purchased to see if everything bolted up and fit okay. It looked good, so back out it came.

October and the rear of the car restoration is about finished.

I am closing in on having the brakes completely done but, after that I'm not sure what to do next.

I thought about dropping the engine and transmission in and then taking it back up to the body shop and have it painted but, then someone told me I should have it jammed before I put the engine in.

Then I stopped into the body shop and they told me that I should get the windows back in the doors before they paint it and they wanted me to have the engine in it when I brought it back so I didn't screw up the paint. Although they did say if I wanted to have it jammed I could bring it back up no problem.

I could use some good advice, thanks.

I'm assuming you are the engine installer. Regarding installing the engine or not, prior to bodywork, the question is, can you install it without damaging the paint in the engine bay? Why the bodyshop cares about that, I don't know, since you did the engine bay restoration. I can understand their concern regarding the windows, because it could chip the paint when installing them. Just leave off the weatherstripping 'til after paint job. JMHO.

BTW, nice work you are doing. That's going to be a sweet looking GT. What are colors you are going with for your '67?

They were more concerned about the paint on the fenders and around the cowl area and not really the engine bay.

The person that told me to have it jammed before I put in the engine said to do that so there wasn't any over spray on the engine.

This is the first time I have done anything like this.

The car was stock Dark Moss Green with Black interior. I really like the dark green but, it is so over done with the Bullitt car and there are like 4 '67 fastbacks around where I live that are the Highland Dark Green.

We have it narrowed down to either Acapulco Blue or Night Mist Blue. My wife likes the Night Mist Blue but, I think the dark color would be a pain to keep looking nice.

I think you would have no trouble guiding the engine into the bay and keeping it away from the fenders. I think they paint the fenders off the car anyway, so don't have them install the hood or fenders at the body shop. You can do that after the engine installation.

When I was searching for my Mustang, I was looking for a Dark Green one, but I came across this one and the rest is history. I really like Dark Moss Green, but Acapulco Blue is another one of my favorite colors.

Lighter colors hide dust and dirt more than dark colors- not that you'd ever let your 'Stang get dirty.

When you say "Jammed", is that painting the door jams?

That is correct, I was going to have him do the door jams, the area around the front and back windows seals, inside trunk and the cowl area.

I just got back from the body shop and they had an Acapulco Blue car in there. I took my wife and daughter to the shop to show them what a complete car looks like when it is done in the hope that they would be convinced. I thought for sure they would see what a great color it is.

They both took one look at it and said they liked the Night Mist Blue better.

Well, you tried. Nightmist Blue is a nice color. SWMBO usually wins anyway.

If its worth considering, here is my 68 fastback just back from paint about a month ago. These were taken just before I lowered her off the rollback when I got her back home.

67 ragtop is right, they should paint your fenders and hood off of the car. I dropped my engine in before the hood and fenders were installed so there was NO chance for something to get scratched while dropping it in.

Thanks for the reply's!

That's a great looking fastback.

So what was installed in your car before you took it in for paint?

I noticed the gas tank was in it. Did you spray the trunk?

One of the shops I talked to before I settled on this one did say they held onto customer's fenders and hood until they were ready for assembly.

Now I'm being told the metallic paint should be sprayed on the car with the hood and fenders on the car and he didn't want to gap the fenders and hood again after it had been painted. That's pretty much the reason I took the car from the body shop so that I could get the engine and front end installed before paint.

I keep hearing this and that about over spray on all the new parts I have installed already and there is no way to get around it. The paint shop I am going to use says don't worry he has been doing this for 30+ years and knows how to mask a car off.

I'd like to know how much further I should go with the assembly before I get it painted.

Thanks again for the reply's!

someone needs to remind these pll that you are doing a 390! it would be better to have the engine/tranny in place BEFORE the paint starts flowing.it's not like dropping a small block in place!
