Default few questions on electrical in 1967 mustang

i have a 1967 mustang V8 4.7, it has been siting for several years and i had just been able to cme across this project for free and for fun. now i replaced the battery in it just to see what would happen and i get a ticking from the solenoid i beleive. it sits on the wall of the engine compartment next to the battery. well i get a ticking from that and the only thing that gets power is the radio. what might cause the problem of starting it. would it be the starter solenoid and the start itself or could it be cause of the distributor cap or both sorry i know i am not that great and explaining these things out on the computer. but she wont give me a crank or anything could i get a list of things that might need to be done or whatnot. pls any assistance appreciated.

Hello Tom, welcome.

If the engine won't turn over its got nothing to do with the distributor cap. It could be a starter, engine or solenoid problem or maybe all of them.

If its been sitting for several years there could be all kinds of things causing your problem from minor to very serious so give us some more hints. Exactly when and how does it click? Does it click only when you turn the key to start? If so, is the click just from the solenoid or are there sounds from the starter and engine also?

Just a solenoid click usually means a dead battery but with a new one that shouldn't be the case. If the engine is frozen then the starter should probably click as well. Can you turn the engine by hand (socket on the front of the crankshaft) to see if its free?

Before you do any damage to the engine, I'd remove the plugs and squirt some oil in each cylinder and try turning the engine by hand, to make sure it turns. If it 's stuck, spray PB Blaster in each cylinder and let it sit a day or so. Then, try to gently turn it slowly with a breaker bar and socket on the crank nut.

Is it just one tick each time you hit the starter, or does it click continually as long as you hold the key in the start position?

If it just gives one click it can be a bad solenoid, bad starter, or bad connection from the solenoid down to the starter. ...maybe a locked engine...

I presume if the headlights are on and you hit the starter they will stay on and not blink off. If they go out, look more towards poor connections on the battery or a cable...

Multiple clicks: Sometimes a bad connection in a cable that loses conection when the current surges, drops, then makes again.
A weak battery can do it, but surely the new battery is charged and good...

One other thing that can cause multiple clicks is if the starter solenoid is connected incorrectly. I don't recall if that year had the 2 small terminals or just the one. If the small wire from the ignition switch is connected to the wrong terminal on the type with the 2 small connections it will click repeatedly...

On second thought, I think I have this problem confused with something else. I would just edit it out, but this forum doesn't seem to have the edit button so I guess I can't fix my mistake...
