Hello Shagadoodle,
Listen to your dad. He is right.
The tach seems to be working just fine. As far as higher revs.- - -It is not a great idea to just high rev the motor. Not great for the motor. When you do put the car on the road you will have a much better idea for what the motor can do. You should be able to take her to 5,000 no problem but>>>>>>>
Don't be in a rush to high rev. When the car is LEGALLY on the road. Take her out to a deserted place and try her out. Take her up to 4,000 rpms and see how she feels. The tach is just an instrument to check rpm's. It doesn't help the motor go faster or slower. The way the cars runs and how high she will rev depends on a lot of things. Things like timing, tune-up, carb set up, valves etc. will all have a great impact on the ability of higher revs.
So ,my last piece of advice.
SHaggy..DON"T take the car out with out insurance. Repeat....not even for a quick blast. Take it from an old man who has attended to many funerals and bailed out too many friends from jail
Be patient...listen to your dad and be well...... Print Dad
