Default 1965 mustang Carburator issues?

Hello all,

Recently I replaced my turn signal switch and got my car running, I drove it over to the ole hose and decided to do a radiator back flush. As she is idling she decided to just die. I restarted the car and let it run. It ran for about 10 or so more minutes and just died again and this time it would not start back up. I've been going nuts on replacing old parts and have new wires, new coil which is a msd blaster 2 coil, msd pro billet distributer and a edelbrock 600cfm electric choke carb(the carb is about 4 to 5 years old). During the summer I had the choke disconnected and rewired it recently. I can sit and watch the choke operate normally as once it heats up the butterfly is opening but I just can't figure why she runs at a high idle roughly for a while and then dies. I've pulled my plugs out, grounded them and had a buddy turn the car over and I've got good spark, good gap, a new starter relay and starter, and new negative, postive cables so I'm doubting something going on with the ignition. I'm leaning towards the carburator and possibly a vacume leak. It appears as the left hand jet is barely spaying gas while the right primary barrel is getting gas very strong. Also I should make note that when it wouldn't start I had the car turned over while i manually operated the choke and throttle and she would start(rough) but any excessive throttle applied and she would backfire to no end. If i were to guess probably about 2500-3000 rrm. Any thoughts would be most appreciated!!

I believe its at or around 7 or 8 btdc, It's been parked for some time and prior to being park was the last time I had the light on it. I should make mention this has a new fuel pump ,filter, sending unit , and tank as well. after installing these it was running great too. I feel like when the cold weather came is when the issues started. However the choke is working so I'm really at a lost. It just floods out so bad.

Default I had the same problem last year.........

When it got cold last year, my Holley on my '65 started dumping fuel - it had been fine for 4 years.
I had a Frankenstein carb I had put together from about 5 different carbs, so I ended up getting a reman carb and that solved my problem.

Seems like the cold weather amplifies any small problem on a carb or fuel system.

I am also having carb issues; maybe you are on to something with the cold weather; although I live in Arizona and what you consider cold weather may not apply to me.

When you refer to jets, I believe that what you mean is the accelerator pump nozzles. If there is uneven fuel delivery coming out of the nozzles, there must be trash in the carb. It doesn't take a very large particle to clog any of the metering passages.

You are correct the Greek. I blew compressed air down them while I had it apart. These appear to be very simple compared to the holley's I've had apart. I had a 670 street avenger that required constant tuning compared to this two piece body design. I found the passengers side float was stuck as well although it's unclear to me if it just became stuck when i removed the top half the unit. I've got a edelbrock 500 cfm I'm going to install tonight and I'll post my results when I'm done. To durty I'm up here in western washington. It rains nine tenths out of the year and recently we went from high 70's,80's right smack down to freezing, Typically my mustang is in a heated garage and all these issues seemed to pop up after it had been outside exposed. I imagine Arizona could be very cold at night and pop up some of these issues.

Well i put the 500 on, connected fuel, checked for proper choke operation and turned the key and she fired right up, Idled for about 20 to 30 minutes and I thought , alright were good to go. I backed up and went down the road not really having my foot in it and she just started chugging and back firing something terrible. At times it would completly lose power like someone had just cut the fuel or killed spark altogether. So I would let it sit for just a moment and then it would fire right back up. The odd thing is at times it was a screaming demon and had full power. I can feel it when this happens and I pulled away from my buddy in his truck and was up to a 100 in no time and even had time for a smoke before he cuaght up. but then the same thing happend again like it was missing and would sputter and backfire like crazy at idle and die, start up again idle, and then die.I almost want to say it's like it's starved for fuel at times. However I go the timing light on it as she was idling after I had plugged off vaccums and if my mark is correct it looks like it is way out. I just don't get the "all the power in the world sometimes" and "backfires and barely running" other times. Clearly it wasn't the carberator though as the issue always seems to happen after the car has reached operating temperature as it did with it's old carb. any idea's folks, this is killing my mustang positive chi~
