Default 1969 Mustang coupe with t56 tranny. will it work?

I'm restomodding a 1969 mustang coupe and I'm looking into doing a T-56 conversion. I have a 429 cobra jet motor in there and what I really want to know is everything I would have to do for the conversion. I'm basically starting from nothing but a rolling chassis and the motor. I don't have an existing transmission in there at all. Also. After looking for a T-56 for a bit I found that they were really hard to find for mustangs. But I found a bunch of chevy versions for firebirds and camaros and such at pretty affordable prices. Is there any difference between a chevy T-56 and a ford T-56 aside from gear ratios and bell housing? Or do I have to find a ford specific. Thanks guys.

I wouldn't do that. The T56 isn't strong enough to handle all that torque. You're much better off with a Tremec TKO.

The conversion to a modern trans is notall that difficult, but not exactly cheap, either. The old style uses a push type clutch, with a clutch lever. Modern clutches are pull type. Fortunatly, there are conversion kits available.

You could also go with a hydraulic clutch; either a slave cylider or hydraulic bearing.

Matching up the bellhousing can sometimes be a problem. T-5's were designed for the small block crowd. Fortunatly, there are some aftermarket companies that can help you out.

I'd contact Mustangs Plus. I'll bet they've done a bunch of these swaps.

I forgot this earlier, but was recently reminded. earlier this year, Tremec came out with a new T56 6 spped dual overdrive transmission that can handle up to 700 ft/lbs. It has multiple applications, and multiple shifter locations.

I don't know the exact price, but I would expect $3,000-3,500'ish.

For more details, contact Mike Forte at Fortes Parts.
