Default 1968 Mustang 289 Engine Cutting Out

Today I had something quite odd (and frustrating) happen. On my way to school, there was a loud report. I assume this was my car backfiring, but this is the first time it has backfired from the exhaust; it's usually a small click under the hood. At the same time, the engine died without warning. The odd thing was that when this happened, I was coasting in neutral down a hill!

Thank goodness for neutral start, right? Well I still had a heck of a time getting it running again. It would start up again, then die suddenly right away. I managed to pull into a parking lot, let it sit for a while, then started it up again, and it didn't die after that. I have no idea what this could be. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Check your electrical. Plug and coil wires, rotor, distributer cap. Make sure there isn't moisture under the distributer cap. Check your points.

I thought it seemed electrical. I'll double-check what I can before I leave today. I just checked the points maybe a month ago, and they were good.

I'm thinking of putting in electronic ignition at some point; someone mentioned PerTronix on here.

Well, nothing seemed loose, and I had no problems on the way home. Quite an odd fluke! Oh well, thanks nonetheless

Hello macgeek,
I forget your carb type, but I would check the filter
and it wouldn't hurt to add a can of dry gas to the tank.

I was thinking the problem could have been a lean mixture.

It wouldn't hurt to check out the filters - air and fuel
