Default Starting problems with 1970 Mach 1

My 1970 Mach 1 has the 351C and it is about 95% factory. My problem is that I have to use starter fluid or poor gas into the carburetor for the car to crank. Once it runs for a bit it will crank easily for the rest of the day. The next morning though I have to use the starter fluid again. What gives?

It sounds like your carb bowls are draining dry overnight. Will it eventually start if you just keep trying the starter without pouring gas in it?

sound like a carb or fuel delivery ordeal, wait when you try to start it cold is the choke fully closed (tightly) it may be a choke issue also

I did but it just won't work.

I guess I need to rebuild the Carb.

I believe its and Autolite 4300.

Anybody know where I can get the rebuild kit for it?

As soon as my new shop is finished this will be my first project in it.

Hopefully that will be soon.

Thanks for all the input.

Hello RonM3,
First good luck with the car. I also have a 70 351C Mach.

I would like to offer a few tips and ideas in addition to the great ideas already given.
It probably is a carb issue but there are a few other possible causes.

What I would do and did on mine is install a clear in-line filter before the carb.
Available from Fram at places like Wall-mart. This will allow you to see is if the gas is staying in the line. The fuel in the bowl should be enough to start the car but the pump could be weak and you could have an issue as mentioned with the bowls leaking down. So it could be 2 issues at once.

I also wanted to mention that be very careful with the use of starter fluid.
It causes a violent explosion in the motor and more importantly it dries out the cylinder walls. Use very very sparingly.

If you take the carb off....be very careful to use the correct gasket between the carb and intake. Our intakes have a cross-over channel that can create major headaches if the incorrect gasket is used. Does your intake have the original spacer? If so great be sure to use it.

Let us know how it is going...I have had my Mach for about 31 years and know the motors pretty well.

Good Luck...... Print Dad
