Default 1965 Mustang Alternator harness

I have a 1965 mustang with a 289 engine. I am replacing the alternator and harness. I have the gauges so I bought the harness that has three wires in the disconnect, the one in the middle is a big black wire with a yellow stripe. The harness from the regulator to the end of the plug --is already on the car-is white with a black stripe. Would a new underhood harness work with this alternator? I have a big black wire with yellow stripe coming from the starter relay and was connected to the old alternator. I need to know how to wir this correctly. Thanks for any help.

i'm confused. alternator wiring harness from regulator to alternator plug --must be for the lights--I have the alternator harness for the gauges. The wires don't match. Do I need the pigtail for the lights? I recently got the car and the battery would'nt stay charged. Battery tested good-but ahh-alternator was bad. the ground wires were fused togeher -and insulattion was burnt.Don't know if it was hooked up right.

Hi again. The yellow wire going through the firewall from the bat post on the alternator was probably for some sort of aftermarket gauge. It should be a black wire with a yellow stripe coming off of the bat post on the alternator that goes up to the hot side of the starter solenoid.
