Unhappy master cylinder removal

I got a question that to some of the more experienced Mustang wrenchers might be sound dumb but....After finding out I have no fluid getting the rear brakes on my '70 mach, and finding the front resevoir in the master cylinder dry,I thought take and rebuild the master cyl.
Heres the question,do you have to take out the booster and master as a unit 'cause I tried taking off the master alone but there is not enough room to get past the bolts that attach it to the booster without the master hitting the shock tower,I'm stuck.
Any help will be appreciated

Default master cylinder removal

Hello B.A.,
First, I don't have power in my Mach so I can't help too much there.
I would guess that you don't need to remove booster, but that with a little wiggle it should come off.

The main reason I am posting is to offer 2 pieces of advice
1. - I would not rebuild the master - I would purchase new from a place like "Rock Auto or Mustangs Unlimited. Brakes are so important you may have trouble.

2. - You say the bowl was dry.... this would indicate a leaky wheel cylinder, bad hose, or bad brake line. Be sure to find out what caused the bowl to empty.

If it is a wheel cylinder, I would replace both for under $20.00 each,

Try removing the master once more and then you may have to remove it as a unit or at least loosen the booster.

Brakes are so important you don't want to take chances. Just my thoughts Print Dad

appreciate the input Print Dad.Trust me though,I wiggled, there is just no room.I will give it another go though.
Even if I would go the replacement route I still gotta get the old one off.
A bit of info I forgot to mention is that the car had sat for 19 years before I trailered it home,so the empty resevoir is just something I ran across while I'm going over things. So,ya there is probably a leak somewhere but I have to get some fluid to the rear cylinders to find it.
Again thanks, I'll keep on wrenchin'
