Default 1969 Mustang Coupe paint and primer questions

Hi
Everyone
I currently have my 1969 coupe all stripped down at a body shop.
Just would like to keep my eyes open on correct Primer and paint being used so I can have the best possible paint job.

I believe they are using Dupont for the paint but not sure what primer they will be using.

What is the best primer and paint to use?

I would like the car painted black, which is the hardest paint color to do. They said a lot of bodywork needs to be done to her to get her straight and smooth.

It really had a bad problem with the paint job it had before, the paint wasn’t really sticking to it at all and that’s why I am having her stripped down to bare metal and painted again. Any advice would help me a lot when talking to theses guys.
Thanks
jasonk

Not an expert here but a lot of modern paints have their own primer requirement. At least for base coat/clear coat paints they use a non-sanding primer before the base coat but I learned the hard way, you better use a sanding primer first, then sand it, or you will have all kinds of imperfections showing thru that the non sanding primer does not hide.

That being said, not sure what they would do to day for a top of the line primer on a single coat color. All I know for sure that all of that stuff is super expensive these days.

Boomyal hit it on the nose. DuPont is good stuff but every line has higher and lower end products to suit every budget. If they use Dupont Chromabase they must use DP 2K high build primer and sealer prior to base color and finally clearcoat. Ask them what system they are using, Chromabase paint is usually $1000 to $1500(metallics) for all the components. as stated however they do offer lower grades within the dp family of chemicals.
Also a reputable shop knows the factory will warrant the paint and adhesion if the entire system is used so the shop is more likely to do so.

I think they quoted me on a price of 2500 for the paint.
What sort paint would I get for that? I am now doing research on the chromabase paint you mentioned above.
I will also ask them what system they are using.

Thanks

How did you get a 2500 dollar estimate? Dang man, your lucky. I went to five shops around here and all of them said they wouldn't touch my car for under 8000 dollars. Im using the 80 dollar o reilleys urethane primer and from what ive heard from the pros i know its just as good as you can get. I dont know if you would like using it but im just throwing that out there.

hi Jason,A couple of words....first Dupont is a good paint line and most shops will use the same line from primer to paint for warranty and compatability reasons.
But like had been mentioned, paint companies do have low to higher priced lines.
The $2500,is that just paint or that includes everything?
I'm curious, how did you choose the shop?I'm one of the cheapest guys I know, but I hope you didnt choose on lowest price only.

We need more info, what are you getting for 2500? the whole job or just the materials?
If the shop is slow they may be giving you a deal. Also they may have some of the components left over and giving you a deal to keep workers on. Dupont also makes IMRON, Marson and a couple of other people they bought up.
If you are going black the price will be lower, black and white are the least expensive even in a premium lines like DuPont, SpiesHecker or Glasurit.
If its 2500 for the paint they are charging you for good stuff, just see you actually get it(somehow).
Have you seen other work from this shop? talked to any customers? Seen any cars come back?
Find these answers now before its at your expense later.
Paint isnt just paint, its a system. you must use the proper primer, sealer, base, clear in order for the paint to adhere, shine, last and not reject or blister and be compatible between primers and topcoats. Any competent bodyshop can do a good job if they are honest and most of them are. check up on them a little. Ask them where they are buying the paint from, if they are honest they will tell you, if they are crooks they will get mad and acccuse you of not trusting them. Remember Jason its your money, the lowest price is not always the best to do business with - and niether is the highest price.
Do reverse car salesman technique, pretend to be completely ignorant and ask how the job will be done, what are the steps to prepare your car and what can you do to help, what kind of paint and will the paint and paint code be in writing so later on if you have to have any repairs teh colors will match, can I get you to write me out a quote with the materials listed, my dad wants to pitch in and insists on seeing where I'm spending money, how long will it take, how long after can I wax my car(30 days) just act innocent, naieve.
If you go in with both barrels blazing you wont find out anything.
These are jsut a few tips for you to use to evaluate prosective shops I have learned over the years..
