I am trying to remove the ball joint bolt on my 1969 mustang upper control arm, and no matter what i do, it just wont budge. Is there a special tool i need to use to get it off? I already removed the metal piece going through the bolt, i'm just having trouble removing the nut. I have tried a wrench, ratchet, and vice grips.
You are going to have to put pressure on the ball joint as it is most likely spinning with the nut. A pickle fork in between the spindle and the ball joint should accomplish this.

When all else fails, use a bigger wrench. Or use a breaker bar. If the ball joint isn't spinning, get a pipe and stick it on the end of the ratchet or wrench, and rag on it. If that doesn't help, get some PB Blaster, spray it down, wait a bit, then try again. If the ball joint is spinning, see sixtsixstang's post, and apply breaker bar if necessary.

ok, i got the nut off, but now i can't get the bolt out of the spindle. Any suggestions on how i can get that part off? I thought i was going to be as easy as pulling up and getting it off, but thats not working.
They can be quite aggrevating. Especially after 40 years. You may have to heat it up with a torch. Bigger hammer and keep at it. It will eventually break loose.

Try a drift and a hammer like a 16 oz ball peen and hit the spindle some good shots where the joint passes through. also remember the coil sping will keep pushing down on the spindle even if it were loose, you can have a friend pry down on the strut rod or lower control arm with a 6' 2X4 while you knock the holy crap out if the fork or spindle
Never use a pickle fork on a classic Mustang or Ford. Especially if you want to keep any of the parts.
You can get a ball joint separator - looks much like a pitman arm puller.
I am not real sure if I would pull the ball joint and try to replace/rebuild it. If it is shot, the UCAA probably needs to be replaced too. I would get them with everything installed and replace the assembly.
