Default Tool for various rivets?

I am considering buying the rivet tool in the photo below to use on my '66 Mustangs. Its kinda pricey but then breaking one of the plastic rear quarter trim panels in my convertible while installing the trim snaps will cost me more than the price of the tool.

This part seems to be from Scott Drake but no one really describes it well. I assume that one end removes the rivets and the other end installs them? The NPD catalog also says it will work not only for the vent window division bar (vertical) weatherstrip but also for the small seal at the top of the vent window frame as well as the snap rivets in the convertible rear quarter trim panels.

Could anyone who has used this tool please confirm how it both removes and installs rivets and also if it really can do a good job for all 3 of those rivet jobs.

Thanks in advance.

Just to give your question a little bump, I can offer some commentary. I also was considering buying this tool, but did not. I just took a small C-Clamp- when I say small, I am saying like the four inch kind, and broke off the swivel on the theaded end. When you do that, it acts much in the fashion of this tool.

I used that to compress the rivets in my vent window weather strip and I used a metal punch to flatten the rivets for the vent window seal.

I don't have the convertible, so I cant vouch for these methods on those parts, but would think the C-Clamp method would work-with the proper positioning and care not to scratch anything- and would be quite a bit cheaper than this tool- which for most, is a one use tool- unless your going to be working on more than one car in the future.

If only we had a way of all of us sharing these one shot tools- passing them around the country as we need them, then we would really have something!

Thanks for your words - and the bump.

I was wondering exactly how it removes the rivets. The plastic rear quarter trim panels in the convertibles, especially after 40+ years, are more than a little brittle. I am concerned that either removing (drilling?), or putting rivets back without some 'magic' tool may destroy them.

Even though I have more than one Mustang, I agree, its a tool I wouldn't use much after I put new W/S in both my cars. In another 40 years I won't be around to be concerned about any car.
