1968 Mustang coupe VIN, name that part, and what goes here?
Hey guys I have a 3 part question. It all has to do with my 1968 coupe. I'm trying to find the VIN number to find out what engine I have, but I'm terrible with terminology and couldn't figure out where to look. Can you point out just about where under the hood the VIN is from this pic of under my hood?
Second, What is this blue thing with the little nose coming out of it? And is something supposed to be connected in it?
Third, is this silver part where the air filter goes?
Sorry if I seem dumb by asking these questions, but it's because I am
1.The VIN should be on the inner fender on the drivers side half way between the headlight and the windshield. You should see a little cuut out area i the tab on the fender.
2. The blue thing is where your PCV hose connects and goes to your carb.
3. The silver thing is the carburetor and yes the breather mounts to the top of it.
You have an Inline 6 cylinder engine. Size will be told by the second digit in the VIN.

That blue cap thingy is NOT the PCV valve like sixtsixstang stated. That is the oil cap for a car that originally came with emisions. There would be a black hose connecting it to the air cleaner. The air cleaner would have had a snorkel on it where the hose would attach to a little inlet on it. That means that either that oil filler cap didn't come with the car or your car was emissions equiped.
As for the VIN, that should also be on the front inner fender on the drivers side. Look at the driver side fender near the front of the car. You will notice a cutout in the fender. The vin should be there also.
3. Yes, that is the carburetor where the air filter attaches to with a winged bolt. I post pictures later of my 6 cylinder. There might be some photos in my gallery. My engine was like yours, it came with emissions but the smog set up was missing. So I got a HI-PO style air filter with a 1 barrel carburetor base (you too have a 1 barrel carburetor) and an open emissions oil cap.
Did you just buy te car? If yes, the VIN should be on the title paperwork.
Your engine looks like it's a 200 CID 6 cylinder, but if you provide the casting numbers off the block, we can determine, for sure, what engine it is.
There are 4-5 locations to find a VIN on your car. The part of the car that the fender bolts to is called the inner fender. The notch in the fender is about 18" back from the front edge of the fender. If there is no number in the notch, chances are that the inner fender was replaced. You will have to unbolt the fender top, gently pull back the fender a little, look under the fender edge for the other hidden VIN stamps.
Is there a door data plate on the drivers door? If yes, and it's original to the car, then warranty number on it is the VIN.

That last picture is the air cleaner. What does the bottom look like? It should have a small hole with a lip around it. That will sit on the carburetor and the lip catches the edge of the carburetor. Then there should be a wing nut that holds it down so it doesn't come off while you are driving. Here is a picture of what your engine should look like assembled. Note the black rubber hose between the oil filler cap and air cleaner. It is a 1968 6 cylinder. On those casting numbers anything that starts C8 is from 1968. In comparison on mine anything that starts C6 means that it is from 1966.
EDIT: The one thing that strikes me is the air cleaner. That isn't the correct air cleaner. It is from a V8, so it probably won't fit. Can you take a photo of the bottom?
Here's some more pictures of it. Then also attached are pictures of an item that looks as if it goes with it in some way, but don't know what it is. Is it possible to just go with one of those air filters that sit by themselves? I don't know what they are called, but they are just those flat, circular air filters.
There are 2 bottoms? It looks like the second one is correct. Are the holes in the bottom different sizes? If so, the one with the smaller hole is the one you use. I take it this is your first car?

Those are part numbers. The good news is that they start with "c8" which designates them as '68 model year parts. The odds are good that you have a standard 200 cubic inch, inline 6 cylinder engine.

Yup, and it's very common for the VIN plate to be hidden under the dash pad if the pad has ever been removed and replaced. The pads have a thin slit in them for the VIN plate to stick through and all to common for people to put the pad in and not make sure the VIN plate sticks through.

You would benefit greatly if you would buy the Haynes or Chilton manual for your car. It will show you where the VIN is and how to decode it, what the breather looks like, and a whole lot more will be right at your finger tips.
