1971 Mach1 Transmission Options? Tired of the 3 speed toploader! Well I'm looking for guidance on a transmission for my 71 mach 1. It has a mildly rebuilt 351c and currently has a 3 speed toploader that's connected by a 9" clutch on a 164 tooth flywheel.
Therefore, I'd like to know if there's a list of "easy" transmission swaps that can be done. I suppose a 4 speed toploader would be the most "period-correct" but it is more of a resto-mod, so a T5 or similar would be preferable. I just can't seem to find the information I need as to whether the shifter location would be about the same, and if the current driveshaft would be the correct length to use with a T5. I have similar questions about the transmission crossmember lining up with the mount bolt holes on a T5.
The rear-end gear is currently unknown (working on getting all the data to guesstimate it), it's a 9" housing thats been torn apart and rebuilt by the previous owner, so any tags that were there are gone.
One other requirement for a new transmission would be a similar input shaft (1 1/16 10 spline, if memory serves) and it would bolt up to the bellhousing.
Thanks for any input or data anyone has!
