Default "Early C4" vs. 1965 C4

Ok, just bought a C4 to replace the missing trans in my 65 coupe. It is missing it's metal tag (of course) but has a casting no. of C5AP 70C6B with an A servo. It is a 24/24 spline.

After doing a quick search for shift kits, I find that some shift kits only fit later 65 thru 67 C4's and not the "early" C4's (of course). Did the early 65 (64 1/2) Mustangs come with different C4's? If so, what were the differences and how can I tell which trans I have?

(I always do my research after I buy something doesn't everybody?).

Gracias amigos!

Well, for one thing, the 64 1/2 289/260 v8 blocks had 5 bolt bell housings and the 65 and newer blocks had 6 bolt bell housings.

That would mean there are different C4s as well.

I forgot to mention that the trans came minus bellhousing. I bought a 6 bolt bellhousing separately and it bolts to this trans, no problem.

I think the C5 casting no. would point to a 65 or later C4 wouldn't it?

According to this page it is from a 1965 full size Ford.
Decoding Ford casting part numbers

This chart may be useful as well.
Ford C4 transmission

Best of luck on this. I think this is about all I can offer. Perhaps others will have more information for you.

I have a 5-bolt C4 sitting out of my 64 1/2.

You're right, the C5"A" is the designation for the full size Fords, but I think (or hope) that in this case, the "A" is generic in the casting no's for all C4's in all car models. Or, does your 64 1/2 C4 have a C5Z casting? My motor is a 65, 6 bolt by the way, so I know it's not a "true" 64 1/2.

Thanks!

Mine is a true 64 because it has the 5-bolt pattern. My engine block is a 289 2v from a full-size 63/64 Ford according to the casting number. With that having been changed, my transmission may have been swapped at that time as well.

Where on the transmission is the casting number? Perhaps I can dig it out enough to see.

I woul dnot expect mine to have a Z in the casting because, according to the 62 1/2 thread elsewhere on this forum, there were no "Z" parts on an all-original 64 1/2. Meaning, that the Z designation didn't begin until 1965.

Mine will likely indicate it is from a Fairlane, or Full-Size Ford...

Look around the transmission shift lever for two circles with numbers in them. The numbers are the build date for the transmission.
Bell housings can be changed but the build date doesn't lie.

Paul, I found the circles you are talking about. Here are some pics of the trans, valve body and the circles.

Looks like February of 1965 C4 made for a 289.
You might contact Jay at Broader Performance Home Page to see if he has a valve body kit for the early C4. The only one that TransGo sells is not meant for performance.
I don't believe that the valve body with interchange with the 67-69 so there just aren't many alternatives.

Got a reply from Jay at Broader Performance... Nope they don't make a shift kit for it, but they will rebuild my trans' internals for 100 bucks. Sounds real reasonable to me. Now I have to decide if I can live with the stock slushbox. Thanks for the tips!

You could always have Jay build a 70s C4 and use your bell housing. You would have to get a new converter but you would end up with a great C4........
$100? That is Cheap! I would charge that much to disassemble a C4 - ANY C4.
I keep telling Jay that he needs to charge more.
