Default 289 oil capacity??

So i did an oil change on my 1965 289 the other day. Oil level was max on the dipstick before i started. Drained the oil..... and got 3.5 liters out (1 gallon). Now i dont claim to know much about these cars, but to me that seemed not a lot. So I apparently have the incorrect dipstick installed, and it sort of explains my noisy lifters when its running towards the minimum on the dipstick (god only knows how little oil is in the engine then)

.. can anyone tell me the amount of oil that should be in the engine so i can put that in and mark my dipstick.

cheers,
rich

I put in 5 liters of oil in my 289. That's what it calls for. Hope this helps you out.

I am suprised , as my little 2 liter european car takes 5 litres of oil, I assumed that the chunky V8 would need more.

well, at leats that means it wasnt as low as I thought thanks for the advice!
