Default 1965 coupe external regulator issues

I have a 65 coupe and for some reason it will not charge the battery.I have put a new solenoid, alternator, external voltage regulator and battery and still it wont start after a couple days .I have been investigating the wiring from the regulator and there are 4 wires coming from it ,yellow, white, green, and blk.for some reason the previous owner of the car has spliced the wires and has hooked the blk wire to the white the white to the green and yellow to yellow and the green from the regulator is not hooked up at all.im pretty sure this is the problem common sense tells me that blk is ground and the others should all hook to their respective colors.now that ive switched the wires back to the right colors i have noticed there is no ground from the alternator to the neg of the battery is the ground off the alternator possibly the cause and could the previous owners wiring have fried the new regulator ?any help would be apreciated cause this is getting really frustrating thanks
