Default Serpentine Kit on older 289

Hello - I'm looking to adapt a later model serpentine setup on my old '66 fastback. How difficult is this? I'm already finding out that I might need to swap balancers to get a 4-bolt pulley. I will also switch to a later model water pump so it dumps out on the driver's side. I'm running an alternator and power steering. (No AC) Do I need to run a newer power steering pump or can I swith the pulley?
Is there any other surprises I need to be aware of? I'm NOT interested in buying a March setup!

Thanks a bunch for the help...

The serpentine water pump is reverse rotation. You will need to replace the fan or go electric.

I am running a 93 Mustang GT type PS pump on my 65 without issue.

The BIG trick in your task will be finding the crankshaft pulley. If you replace the entire balancer, it will need to be a 28 ounce to match your vintage engine.

I have an 88 engine in mine, so I have the standard 50-oz balancer.

All 351 Windsor engines are 28 oz imbalance. You can use a balancer from it. I found serpentine pulleys off of an eighties era Crown Vic. I have intentions of using them in place of my V-belt pulleys. I won't be using a tensioner, just the pulleys. I need the added surface area of the ribbed belt to keep my alternator pulley from slipping. I don't have any accessories to drive, only the alternator and water pump which can stay with standard rotation and passenger side inlet. Belt routing and adjustment will be like with the V-belt. The backspacing of the pulleys all line up.

The water pump and alternator pulleys should interchange straight out, but the serpentine water pump pulley has no grooves on it and is designed to contact the smooth outer side of the serpentine belt. Mine has 2 lips on it so, I guess the belt would stay on, but can you get enough "wrap" around that pulley and traction to be fully effective without using the entire serpentine setup and tensioner?

I don't think you will find a serpentine pulley to fit the classic PS pump unless there is an aftermarket item available. The newer serpentine pulleys are simply pressed onto the pump shaft. (Well, not so simply... they are a royal pain to get on and off!)

I used the entire setup with the tensioner from a late eighties Mercury Grand Marquis, which should be the same as the Crown Vic.
I also used an underdrive kit...

Since you have Power Steering, I would suggest using the entire setup similar to what I did.

Can you get away without using a tensioner?

The set up that I'm going to use doesn't need a tensioner. I have a waterpump pulley that is grooved. I don't have power steering or A/C, but here's the engineering numbers of the grooved water pump pulley and related crank pulley.

Waterpump D9AE-8509-B7B
Crankshaft E5AE-6312-A7A

These pulleys require a belt with 6 Ribs. The car that I removed the pulleys from had power steering, so the related pulley is made, I just didn't need it. Even if you use a P/S and Alternator pulley that isn't an exact match, the backspacing can be adjusted to an extent by adjusting the pump or alternator's mounting position.

From the engineering numbers the waterpump pulley date is 1979 and the crank pulley, 1985.

With the ribbed pulley and no PS nor A/C it seems like a snap!
Use the tensioning adjustment on the classic alternator bracket and bingo!

Thanks for the part numbers!

Not sure ... but will he also need to deal with a different water pump outlet location ?

Nope, he is just changing out the three pulleys and will find a belt the right size and be done.

If you have power steering, or A/C, that is a different story. There are no off-the shelf pulleys for the older compressors or PS pumps.

If those are needed, I still think the best fit is the complete serpentine setup with "modern" (1980s) brackets, pulleys and tensioner. With that setup, you would use the A/C compressor, PS pump, reverse water pump, reverse fan, reverse lower radiator hose, and alternator that go with the brackets.
